Why Your CPQ Solution Might Be Driving Customers Away — and How to Fix It

When the First Impression Confuses

I analyze a lot of websites, selection tools, configurators, and CPQ systems — and I often find myself asking:

What was the developer trying to tell me with this?

Instead of being intuitive and user-friendly, many of these systems feel overloaded, cluttered, or simply not thought through. The result? Customers do not understand the structure and bounce quickly.

The Problem with CPQ Solutions

CPQ systems (configure, price, quote) are often built as separate websites, which is not a problem in itself. But as soon as every click opens a new window, or different solutions have been wired together somehow, you end up with a construct nobody can follow. Navigation suffers — and so does the conversion rate.

A Patchwork That Creeps In Over Time

Over time the system keeps growing. New functions get added, tools get combined — and at some point you lose the overview. To internal teams the solution may feel familiar after years, but an outsider is left wondering:

What were they thinking?

If customers do not immediately understand how to use your tool, they leave and look for an alternative.

Less Is Often More

Many companies underestimate the power of simplicity. A lean, well-considered system is often more effective than an overloaded solution with too many features. Usability means the customer intuitively understands what to do — without instructions or a long ramp-up.

My Tip: Check Your Analytics

If you are unsure whether your system is genuinely user-friendly, take a look at your analytics data. Is the bounce rate high compared to other pages, or is usage low? Then you definitely have work to do. A clear structure, intuitive navigation, and a seamless experience make the difference — and they keep your customers around.

👉 Have your tools analyzed and optimize your CPQ solution — because sometimes less really is more.
